Social and Emotional Intelligence (SEI) is the ability to understand and manage our own emotions, recognize the emotions of others, and use this information to guide our thinking, behavior, and relationships.
The concept of Emotional Intelligence was introduced in 1990 by researchers John D. Mayer and Peter Salovey, who defined it as the ability to monitor one's own and others' emotions, distinguish among them, and use this information to guide thoughts and actions. Later, psychologist Daniel Goleman popularized the concept worldwide, making it a cornerstone of leadership, personal development, and relationship effectiveness.
Social Intelligence complements Emotional Intelligence by focusing on our ability to understand people, navigate social situations, build meaningful relationships, and positively influence others. According to the Institute for Social and Emotional Intelligence (ISEI), Social and Emotional Intelligence is the ability to be aware of our own emotions and those of others in the moment and use that information to manage ourselves and our relationships effectively.
The model is built around four key dimensions: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management. Together they form the foundation of effective leadership, conscious parenting, healthy relationships, and personal success.
